Chapter 81. The Book of Adab* (Good Manners)

[*Adab: To discipline the self to have good character and the excellent words and actions which the Shari'a recommends and logic reinforces. It entails employing good words and actions. Adab is derived from ma'duba (banquet), which is a meal which is preferred and then to which people are invited. It is called that adab because it is that to which everyone is invited.]

I. Dutifulness (birr) and maintaining ties of kinship

The words of Allah Almighty, "We have instructed man to honour his parents..." (29:8)

5625. Al-Walid ibn 'Ayzar reported that he heard Abu 'Amr ash-Shaybani say, "The owner of this house (and he indicated the house of 'Abdullah) reported to me saying, 'I asked the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, what action was most loved by Allah and he answered, "The prayer at its proper time."' 'Abdullah asked, "Then what?" He said, "Then devotion to parents." He said, "Then what?" He said, "Jihad in the way of Allah."

He said, "He related them to me and if I had asked for more, he would have told me more."

II. Who is the person most entitled to the best company?

5626. Abu Zur'a related that Abu Hurayra said, "A man* came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and asked, 'Messenger of Allah, what person is the most entitled to the best of my company?' He answered, 'Your mother.' He asked, 'Then whom?' He said, 'Your mother.' He asked, 'Then whom?' He said, 'Your mother. He asked, 'Then whom?' He said, 'Your father.'"

Ibn Shubruma and Yahya ibn Ayyub said that Abu Zur'a related the like of it.

[*The man was Mu'awiya ibn Hayda, the grandfather of Bahz ibn Hakim.]

III. One should only go on jihad with the permission of one's parents

5627. Abu'l-'Abbas related that 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr said, "A man asked the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, 'Can I go on jihad?' The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, asked, 'Are your parents alive?' He answered, 'Yes.' He said, 'Then strive in caring for them.'"

IV. A man should not abuse his parents

5628. Humayd ibn 'Abdu'r-Rahman related that 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr said that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "One of the major wrong actions is for a man to abuse his parents." It was said, "O Messenger of Allah, how can a man curse his parents?" He said, "He may curse another man's father who in turn curses his father, and curse his mother and he in turn curses his mother."

V. The acceptance of the supplication of someone who is dutiful to his parents

5629. Nafi' related from Ibn 'Umar that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "While three people were travelling, they were caught by the rain and took shelter in a cave in a mountain. A large boulder fell from the mountain and blocked the entrance to the cave and blocked their way out. They said to one another, 'Think of righteous actions you have done for the sake of Allah and invoke Allah by them and perhaps He will remove it.

"One of them said, "O Allah, I had very old parents and young children. I used to work as a shepherd for the, When I returned to them in the evening and had milked the animals, I began with my parents and let them drink before my children. One day I went a long way seeking grazing and did not come back until late evening and they had gone to sleep. I milked as I normally did and brought the milk and stood at their heads, as I disliked to wake them up and I disliked to give the milk to the children before them. while the children were crying out of hunger at my feet. I remained like and they remained as they were until dawn. If you know that I did that out of the desire for Your Face, then make an opening for us so that we can see the sky.' Allah gave them an opening through which they could see the sky.

"The second said, 'I had a cousin whom I loved with the greatest love which men can love women. I tried to seduce her and she refused unless I gave her a hundred dinars. I worked hard until I had collected a hundred dinars and I took it to her. When I was sitting between her legs, she said, "O slave of Allah, fear Allah and not break the seal without having the right to do so." I got up and left her. O Allah, if You know that I did that out of the desire for Your face, then make an opening for us!' It opened for them a bit.

"The last said, 'O Allah, I employed a worker for a faraq of rice. When he finished his work, he said, "Give me my due." I offered him his due, but he left it and turned from him. I continued to sow it until I amassed from it some cattle and a cowherd. Then he came to me and said, "Fear Allah and do not wrong me. Give me my due." I said, "Go to those cattle and their cowherd." He said, "Fear Allah and do not make fun of me." I answered, "I am not making fun of you." Take those cattle and their cowherd." So he took them and left with them. If You know that I did that out of the desire for Your Face, release us from the rest of it!' Allah released them.'"

VI. Lack of dutifulness to parents is a major wrong action

'Abdullah ibn 'Amr said that it is from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.

5630. Warrad related from Al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Allah has forbidden you: disobedience to your mothers, refusing to fulfil your obligations and taking what is not lawfully yours, and burying your daughters alive. He dislikes for you to indulge in useless talk, asking too much and wasting wealth."

5631. 'Abdu'r-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr related from his father, Abu Bakra, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Shall I inform you of the greatest of wrong actions?" He had been reclining and now sat up and said, 'And false witness.' He continued to repeat it until we said, 'I wish he would be quiet.'"

5632. 'Ubaydullah ibn Abi Bakr said that he heard Anas ibn Malik say, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, mentioned the greatest wrong actions (or was asked about the greatest wrong actions) and he said, 'Associating with Allah, murder, and disobedience to parents.' He said, "I did not give it to you so that you could wear it, but for you to sell or to give to someone else to where." 'Umar sent it to a brother of his among the people of Makka before he had become Muslim.'"

What is wrong with him?" The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "What he wants is to know something." The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Worship Allah and do not associate anything else with him. Establish the prayer and pay the zakat and maintain ties of kinship. Leave it!" (47:22)"

I had hidden myself and he said, 'Ghunthar!' His wife swore that she would not eat it until he ate it and the guest (or guests) swore that he (or they) would not eat it until he ate it. Abu Bakr said, 'It seems this was from Shaytan.' He called for the good and ate and they ate as well. Whenever they took a morsel, more than it appeared under it. He said, 'Sister of the Banu Firas, what is this?' She answered, 'Apple of my eye, there is now more than there was before we ate.' They ate and sent it to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace." It is mentioned that he ate from it.

Bushayr ibn Yasar, the client of the Ansar related from Rafi' ibn Khadij and Sahl ibn Abi Hathma, "'Abdullah ibn Sahl and Muhayyisa ibn Mas'ud ibn Zayd went to Khaybar and they parted in the palm trees. 'Abdullah ibn Sahl was murdered. Then 'Abdu'r-Rahman ibn Sahl, and Muhayyisa and Huwayyisa, the sons of Mas'ud, went to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and began to speak to him about the case of their companion. 'Abdu'r-Rahman, the youngest of the people, began, and the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'Let the eldest speak first.' They spoke about the case of their companion and the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'Do you demand the right of your murdered man (or 'your companion') by fifty of taking oaths?' They said, 'Messenger of Allah, it is a matter which we did not see.' He said, 'Then the Jews can clear themselves by fifty men taking an oath.' They said, 'Messenger of Allah, they are people of the unbelievers!' So the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, himself paid the blood money.'"

Sahl said, "I got a she-camel from those camels. It entered a camel enclosure and kicked me."

It gives its fruits in every season with the permission of its Lord and its leaves do not fall." He said, "It occurred to me that it was the palm tree, but I did not like to speak while Abu Bakr and 'Umar were there. When they did not speak, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'It is the palm tree.' When I left with my father, I said, 'Father, it occurred to me that it was the palm tree.' He said, 'What kept you from saying so? I would have preferred you saying that to such-and-such and such-and-such.' I said, "Nothing kept me except the fact that I did not see you or Abu Bakr speak and so I disliked to do so.'"

XC. What is permitted of poetry, rajaz poetry, and camel-chanting, and what is disliked of it

His words, "And as for the poets, it is the misled who follow them. Do you not see how they ramble on in every style and that they say things which they do not do? Except for those who believe and do right actions and remember Allah repeatedly and defend themselves after they have been wronged. Those who do wrong will soon know the kind of reversal they will receive!" (26:224-227)

Yazid ibn Abi 'Ubayd related that Salama ibn al-Akwa' said, "We went out with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, towards Khaybar and we travelled at night, One of the men among the people said to 'Amir ibn al-Akwa', 'Won't you let us hear some of your verses?' 'Amir was a poet and so he got down and started to chant with the camels of the people. He said:

''O Allah, were it not for You, we would not have been guided

       nor given sadaqa nor prayed!

So forgive as ransom what we have not done,

and send down tranquillity on us.

Make our feet firm when we meet the enemy,

but we refuse if they desire to tempt us.

They have bayed out for help against us!'

"The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, asked, 'Who is this driver?' They answered, ''Amir ibn al-Akwa'.' He said, 'May Allah have mercy on him!' A man among the people said, 'It [i.e. martyrdom] is mandatory, Prophet of Allah! Would that you let us enjoy him longer!' So we came to Khaybar and besieged them until we were afflicted by terrible hunger. Then Allah Almighty gave us the conquest of it over them. In the evening of the day on which they conquered them, the people kindled several fires. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, asked, 'What are these fires? For what are they being kindled?' They said, 'For meat.' He asked, 'For what meat?' They answered, 'For (cooking) domestic donkeys.' The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'Pour them out and break them.' A man said, 'O Messenger of Allah! Or can we pour them out and wash them?' He said, 'Or that.'

When they returned home, Salama said, 'The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saw me and took hold of my hand and said, "What is the matter with you?" I said to him, "May my father and my mother be your ransom! They claim that 'Amir's actions are lost!" The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, asked, 'Who said that?' I said, 'So-and-so, so-and-so, so-and-so and Usayd ibn al-Hudayr al-Ansari said it.' The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'Whoever said that has lied. He has a double reward.' He put two of his fingers together and said, 'He is a striving striver. Few Arabs have achieved the like of him!'"

5797. Abu Qilaba related that Anas ibn Malik said, "The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came to some of his wives while Umm Sulaym was with them. He said, 'Mercy on you, Anjasha! Be gentle with the glass vessels!'" "Among us is the Messenger of Allah who recites His Book

as the sun appears shining at daybreak.

He brought guidance after our blindness, and so our hearts

are certain that what he says will take place.

He spends the night, his side shunning his bed, while

the idolworshippers's beds hold them in deepest sleep."

'Uqayl corroborated it from az-Zuhri.

Az-Zubaydi has it from az-Zuhri from Sa'id and al-A'raj from Abu Hurayra.

5800. Abu Salama ibn 'Abdu'r-Rahman related that he heard Hassan ibn Thabit al-Ansari asking Abu Hurayra to testify, saying, "Abu Hurayra, I ask you by Allah, did you hear the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, 'Hassan, answer for the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, support him with the Pure Spirit.'" "Yes," Abu Hurayra said.

I said, 'By Allah, I will not give him permission until I ask the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, for permission for him. It was not his brother, Abu'l-Qu'ays, who nursed me. It was the wife of Abu'l-Qu'ays who nursed me.' The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, visited me and I said to him, 'Messenger of Allah, Aflah, the brother of Abu'l-Qu'ays, asked permission to visit me, but I refused to give him permission until I had asked for your permission.' The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'What stops you from giving permission to your uncle?' I said, 'Messenger of Allah, the man is not the one who nursed me. It was his wife who nursed me.' He said, 'Admit him. He is your uncle, may your right hand be dusty!'" I greeted him and he said, 'Who is this?' I said, 'It is Umm Hani' bint Abi Talib.' He said, 'Welcome, Umm Hani'.' When he finished his ghusl, he stood up and prayed eight rak'ats wrapped in a single cloth. When he finished, I said, 'Messenger of Allah, my brother claims that he is going to kill a man to whom I have given sanctuary. It is so-and-so, the son of Hubayra.' You have severed your brother's neck,' and he repeated that three times. 'If one of you must praise someone, he should say, "I reckon he is such-and-such," and Allah is his Reckoner. No one should commended and praised in front of Allah.' This is if he actually knows that [about the person].

5811. Abu Salama and ad-Dahhak related that Abu Sa'id al-Khudri said, "When we were with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he was making a division of booty, Dhu'l-Khuwaysira, a man of the Banu Tamim, came to him and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, be just!' He said, 'Woe to you! Who will be just if I am not just?' 'Umar said, 'Give me permission to cut off his head!' He said, 'No. He has companions such that the prayers of one of you seem inconsequential compared to their prayers and your fasting inconsequential compared to their fasting. They will leave the deen like the arrow passes through game. He looks at his arrowhead and there is nothing on it. Then he looks at the mount of its head and there is nothing on it. He will look at its shaft and there is nothing on it. Then he will look at its feathers and there will be nothing on them, for it has been too fast for excrement and blood. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was brought a basket of dates and said, 'Take it and give it away as sadaqa.' The man said, 'To other than my family, Messenger of Allah? Anas said, "We asked, 'And us as well?' He answered, 'Yes. That day we were very happy indeed. A slave belonging to al-Mughira passed by and he was of my generation. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'If this one should live long, he will not become senile before the Final Hour comes.'"

Shu'ba has it in brief from Qatada who said, "I heard Anas report from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace..."

He found him playing with some children in the hills of Banu Maghala. Ibn Sayyad, who was approaching puberty, did not notice them until the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, patted his back with his hand and then said, 'Do you testify that I am the Messenger of Allah?' He was lying down on his bed in a sheet of his murmuring. Ibn Sayyad's mother saw the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, concealing himself among the palm trunks and she said to Ibn Sayyad, 'Saf! (which was his name) This is Muhammad.' So Ibn Sayyad stopped. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'If she had left him, it would have been clear.'"

Salim also reported that 'Abdullah said, "The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, stood up among the people and praised Allah as He deserves and then he mentioned the Dajjal and said, 'I warn you about him, and there is no Prophet who did not warn his people about him. Nuh warned his people about him, but I will say something to you which no Prophet has said to his people. You should know that he is one-eyed and that Allah is not one-eyed.'"

[NOTE: In the Jahiliyya they used to call the vine 'karm' (which comes from the root meaning 'generous') and they also called the wine which was made from it 'karm 'and thought that drinking it made one noble and generous (karam). This is why they honoured (karrama) those who drank it. The Shari'a disliked this because it affirmed their delusions about wine.]

Are you hurt at all?' He said, 'No, but see to the woman.' So Abu Talha threw a cloth over his face and went towards her and threw his cloth over her, and the woman got up. Then he saw them both onto their camel and they rode. They travelled until they could see Madina - or they were looking down over Madina.
